Daniel Novack shared his experience on copyright enforcement as Senior Counsel at Penguin Random House, where he supervises the company’s anti-piracy efforts. His presentation focused on the issues that are most important for the publishing industry regarding copyright enforcement, in particular in the online context, where he underlined the complexities of enforcing copyrights at a global scale. 

Obi Ezeilo, Director of Enforcement Operations of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), spoke about the recent anti-piracy operations in Nigeria, that led to the apprehension of thousands of pirated copies of books. He also spoke about NCC’s work to promote a copyright law review in Nigeria, announced a few years ago to bring Nigerian law up to speed on online enforcement, a much-needed reform to support NCC’s enforcement operations to be extended to the digital context.   

Weizmann Jacobs shared insights about his day-to-day work as Detective Constable for Disruption & Cyber Investigations at the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU, UK). He mentioned the importance of raising awareness and educating the public about the dangers of illegal websites. He also presented PIPCU’s international collaborations with other enforcement authorities.
