More than half of the world’s population lives in cities. Even though cities only make up 3% of the earth’s land, more than 3.5 billion people live in cities today. Growing cities can pose many challenges. Unplanned urbanization leads to larger number of slum dwellers, inadequate infrastructures and services, and worsening air pollution.

As more people make cities their homes, it is very important to focus on making them safe, inclusive, and sustainable. Are there sidewalks? Are there enough jobs and homes for everyone? Is it safe to walk at night? Is the air clean? Are the parks taken care of? These are questions addressed in the new reading list.

The new books for SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities promote the idea that everyone can nurture the environment in the local communities they live in. Small changes, started early on, will have big impacts.
