Mr. Echeverria gave a useful overview of how the world of publishing in Latin America has been faring in the last years and during the current COVID-19 pandemic. He pointed to the particularities of the region’s publishing industry, from the complex distribution system and the lack of reliable statistical data to challenges connected to its fragmentation.

At the same time, he also responds to pressing questions which are on the mind of many working in this area, for example on what opportunities he sees for changes in publisher’s business model. “I believe (that) we have to have more vision and open ourselves to other possibilities. (…) As a publisher, you have to also look at ways of distribution. There are many different ways to get to the market now. You don’t need a huge warehouse full of books, logistics of people working there, mixed inventories. I think that we have to look at things like publishing on demand,” Echeverria stated.
