Peter Kraus vom Cleff, General Manager of the Börsenverein: “In these times marked by political and social challenges, it is the task of all of us to stand up for the values of a free, democratic society. What is needed for this is the willingness to engage in respectful discourse and to listen to one another. For the fifth time, on the initiative of the book industry, a broad alliance is coming together for Freedom of Expression Week to highlight the importance of dialogue, debate and diversity of opinion and to put it into practice with a comprehensive and diverse program.”
The kick-off campaign around banned books looks at how the banning of books is a key intervention in the understanding of democracy in a society that is characterized by diversity and openness. The book trade, as one of the most important meeting places for a free and pluralistic exchange, is being invited to give banned book a voice on Saturday, May 3rd, as the start of the Freedom of Expression Week.
