The research into publishing in the Asia Pacific region was carried out by Australian consultants PA Partners, and highlights the Asia Pacific region as the world’s largest and most economically significant publishing market, generating roughly USD 40.9 trillion in nominal GDP and accounting for about 39 percent of global output. The region’s economic strength, led by major markets including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the ASEAN economies, underpins sustained demand for educational and cultural content.
In 2024, the region generated an estimated USD 400 to 420 billion in combined print and digital publishing revenues. When broad digital publishing ecosystems are included, this represents approximately three quarters of global publishing value. Further, Asia Pacific publishing revenues are forecast to grow at approximately 8-10 % annually through 2030, which is more than double the global growth rates.
In her opening comments at the Tokyo launch of The Publishing Industry in Asia Pacific, IFRRO CEO and Secretary General Anita Huss-Ekerhult noted: “This is a landmark piece of work—one that captures not only the scale and dynamism of the world’s largest publishing market, but also the profound transformations shaping its future. At IFRRO, we are proud to have 19 Reproduction Rights Organisations working across this region. Their efforts are essential to protecting intellectual property, supporting authors and publishers, and ensuring that the economic, educational, and cultural value of publishing is recognised and sustained. The Asia Pacific is a region of extraordinary potential. With the right frameworks in place, it will continue to lead the world in publishing innovation, cultural expression, and educational development. IFRRO is proud to support that journey.”
