Could you tell us quickly about PUP?

PUP is an independent non profit press, founded in 1905, affiliated with Princeton University and committed to the global exchange of peer reviewed knowledge. We celebrate bibliodiversity in our publications program, and publish works for general readers, for students and for scholars.

Why did you sign the SDG Publishers Compact ?

We are inspired by the goals of the compact, and recognize how important it is to align our actions with our words. Many elements of the pact align with our commitments to equity and inclusion and sustainability, and signing the compact is a very meaningful way of engaging with the broadest global publishing community, from which we learn in a multitude of ways.

It was great to see PUP adding initiatives to the IPA SDG Dashboard. What kind of activities are already underway at PUP and what do you have planned?

We are excited by so many of the projects peer presses are sharing on the dashboard, and are grateful to be in the company of so many creative and committed humans. We are an organization that embraces the challenges in the world as an opportunity to learn and to contribute, and our team has multiple initiatives underway, from an accessibility working group ensuring our publications meet global needs, to our partnerships with libraries and bookstores to protect freedoms to read, to growing global collaborations in Latin America and China in support of learning and knowledge exchange through newly launched lecture series. We will continue to share via the dashboard, and appreciate the opportunity.

Do you have any messages for publishers or publishers’ association who are considering signing the compact?

Our publishing community and its ability to navigate the global challenges gains fortitude and impact with every new collaboration. The compact is an opportunity for us to strengthen connections across that community, to learn more from each other through the exchange of ideas and actions, and to use storytelling–foundational to all of publishing–to communicate broadly what we as publishers are capable of and committed to when it comes to global wellbeing.
