As every publisher knows, an ISBN is a standard mandated by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which acts as a unique 13-digit ‘fingerprint’ that identifies a specific book, its edition, and its publisher.
Borghino spoke at the AGM about the work of the IPA, our history, operations and structure, and the current challenges facing the global publishing industry. Artificial Intelligence is a particular concern for ISBN agencies as the number of AI-generated titles threatens to overwhelm the system.
Borghino encouraged all national ISBN agencies, some of which are housed in national libraries or government departments, to work closely with national publishers’ associations to ensure that the agencies’ activities continue to reinforce local publishing economies.
Other IPA representatives attending the meeting included EPF Vice Chair José Manuel Anta and Fernanda Gomes Garcia the Executive Director of one of the IPA’s Brazilian members, CBL. The Co-Chair of the IPA’s Literacy Sub-Committee, Luis González Martín, was also there.
